Captain Hook and His Pirate Costumes

Captain Hook is famously the antagonist of J. M. Barry’s short story and play Peter Pan. The story of Peter Pan has been through several adaptations over the years including a Disney feature and two recent major motion pictures.

The story of Peter Pan is of an orphaned boy who magically finds himself in a land where he never has to grow up. This land is called Never Never Land. Accompanied by other “lost boys” and a fairy the size of a butterfly named Tinkerbell, Peter sets out in search of adventure. Captain Hook and the other pirates are the only adults on the island and Peter fights to right the wrongs the pirates commit. Peter can fly and occasionally returns to the real world to listen to stories told by Wendy Darling.

Jason Isaacs portrays Captain Hook in 2003’s traditional version of Peter Pan. In this version Peter takes the Darling children with him from London to Never Never Land with the idea that Wendy will be a mother to the Lost Boy’s. But after battling Captain Hook the Darling children realize that they will miss their mother and the opportunities growing up allows them they decide its best to go back to London.

In 1991 Robin Williams appeared in the film “Hook” where he played a grown up Peter Pan returning to Never Never Land to save his children, whom had been taken hostage by Captain Hook, this time played by Dustin Hoffman. Captain Hook put Peter’s daughter in a fancy dress and his son in several pirate costumes before settling on the one that most resembled Captain Hook himself. Pan and several of the lost boys disguised themselves in pirates costumes to sneak onto Captain Hooks boat to take back Pan’s children. Also in this version of Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, played by Julia Roberts, acts on her crush for peter and shows up in a Fancy Dress and announces her love for Peter. Torn by his love for his wife and his affection for Tinkerbell Peter realizes that he can never fully commit to living in Never Never Land again.

Pirate costumes for men are commonly fashioned in the style portrayed by Captain Hook. It is common during Halloween to see several people wearing pirates costumes.
